Polar Plunge

wms polar plunge logoSince 2007 West Middle has participated in the Lake St. Louis – Special Olympics Polar Bear Plunge.  Support for this event provides opportunities to thousands of athletes in the St. Louis Metro Area.  Through year-round sports, Special Olympics fosters acceptance and inclusion in our community.  Special Olympics Missouri offers children and adults with intellectual disabilities training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community.

Because of the continued growth and success of West Middle’s participation in this very important fund raising event we for the first time will be hosting our very own Polar Bear Plunge.  All participants will get a Polar Bear Plunge shirt and bragging rights for taking part in this inaugural event.  We will have a grade level competition for who can raise the most money and the top ten fundraisers in each grade will receive a free pizza lunch.

Date / Time: Thursday, December 20th, 2018 / during your lunch period

Location: WMS Track.  R & R Pools will be providing the pool and the local fire department will be providing the water.  Paramedics will also be on hand in order to ensure everyone’s safety.

Joining the WMS Team:

-Complete and return “minor waiver” (attached).  Waiver must be turned in at the main office by Thursday, December 6th.

AND

-Complete the online registration (before December 6th):

Go tohttp://give.somo.org/goto/WMS

And click: “Join Team”

-In order to participate in the plunge you must complete the online registration and raise at least $50 BEFORE Thursday, December 6th.  Most often the best way to fundraise is by using the on-line donation page that you will set up during the registration process.  This is a fast and easy way to reach out to friends and family using social media in order to request donations.  However, cash and checks (made payable to SOMO / Special Olympics Missouri) are also acceptable.  Cash and checks will be turned in on Thursday, December 6th at pre-plunge registration at WMS.

Pre Plunge Registration / Thursday, December 6th:

PLEASE NOTE… this is a brand new event / procedure so please be flexible and ready for changes and updates as we get closer to the day of the registration / plunge.

Special Olympics will be at WMS to complete the pre plunge registration on Thursday, December 6th.  The plan is to do this during your lunch… but again this is a first time effort so be ready and flexible.

Which means:

            - have your minor waiver form turned in prior to December 6th

            - bring any cash or checks (off line donations) that you have collected

-if we cannot get to everyone during lunch be prepared to be called out of class (this will only be for a few minutes)

Plunge Day:

-The plunge will take place during lunch / after participating students have finished eating.  The local fire department and paramedics will be there to ensure everyone’s safety.

What to Wear / Bring:

-wear a swimming suit or shorts and shoes (required).  Sandals and flip flops are NOT recommend.

-a complete change of clothing (including shoes) for afterwards

-towel(s)

-DO NOT wear your glasses…

-The locker rooms will be available as a changing area before and after your plunge but my recommendation for arriving prepared is to wear the clothing you plan to wear into the water under the clothing you plan to change into after the plunge.  This will make your pre plunge preparation go much smoother.

-Ms. McGillycuddy will be our official photographer so be looking for her and be ready to smile.

-After plunging students will go immediately inside through the small gym in order to change.
