As we move into the final weeks of summer, we wanted to provide you with an important update. At the regular July meeting, the Fort Zumwalt Board of Education approved changes to district policy to ensure our school district stays in compliance with state law.
You might already be aware that Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe signed Senate Bill 68 into law July 9. Included in the broad education bill was Section 162.207, which requires school districts in Missouri to adopt policy that, at a minimum, prohibits students’ use of “electronic personal communication devices” from the beginning of the school day until the end of the school day. The law features exceptions for emergencies and for students with specific educational or health needs.
You also are probably aware that Fort Zumwalt middle schools already follow an off-and-away-all-day policy, requiring students to store devices from bell to bell. Your middle school student should not see too many changes as a result of the new law. However, we will be sure to share details of the new policy as we get into the new school year. School starts Aug. 18, and the new law will be a part of our regular discipline review. Teachers will also review expectations with students as we start the year.
In Fort Zumwalt, it’s our mission to Educate, Empower and Equip Students to Excel - in work and in life. As an organization, Fort Zumwalt is making a conscious decision to use positive messaging as we inform students, families and staff about this updated policy. Studies show that students who have devices off and away all day find it easier to concentrate, experience a more positive social environment and see improved academic outcomes.
Thank you for your partnership in your student’s academic progress. Please watch for email updates and information on your school website.
